Idaho is notable for its varied terrain, moderate mountain climate, and tremendous outdoor recreational options.

The northern Panhandle region is dotted with lakes, and timbered mountains mixed with prairies, including the eastern portion of the famed Palouse Hills. Plentiful water and timber allow for remote and self-sufficient living, with access to growing economies in the Coeur d’Alene and Moscow areas.

Central Idaho is rugged and mountainous, cut across by the Salmon and Clearwater Rivers. The dramatic narrow valleys harbor mild climates in Idaho’s “Banana Belt”, while the surrounding mountains provide a great level of security, as well as wilderness and hunting access.

Southern Idaho is characterized by the sweeping Snake River plain, in an extensive semi-desert agricultural region. Southern Idaho cities are experiencing great economic growth, and opportunities abound.

For the prepper, Idaho offers and cultural and physical isolation from most major cities, with the exception of the Spokane-CdA metro area (population 734,218) and the Boise metro area (population 831,235).

For remote retreats, Idaho has some of the largest wilderness and roadless areas in the lower 48. Especially notable, portions of the River of No Return Wilderness are extremely remote, or accessible only by boat or helicopter.

For off-grid property, southern Idaho has acceptable solar power potential. Northern Idaho offers good potential for micro hydro power, but heavy snow and overcast days discourage complete reliance on solar power.
