Central Florida Living with Off Grid Preparedness for 6+ Months!

Good morning Mary Lou Back around Y2K when some became concerned about the computer glitches that could occur when we rolled over into the next 1000 years, Lisa and put a lot of money into preparing for that. Consequently, We have 2 Wells on the property. One is electric and one is a Working hand pump that pumps Water straight from the aquifer from a water table of 100 feet down. The casing for the well goes 180 feet and the hole believe is somewhere around 350 feet deep. Florida would have to dry up for that well to go dry. Also, there is a diesel generator in the pump house and diesel fuel in the large storage tank near the pump house. There is a large inverter in the garage and a battery bank outside the garage, where the philodendrons are. The system makes it possible to pump water running off the diesel generator. To be fuel efficient…the idea is to charge the batteries (to capture all the output from the generator) and run the house off the batteries. There is enough power in the batteries to run the house for 2-3 days at a time (without running the generator). Doing it that way, there is enough diesel fuel in the tank to sustain the house if the electric company went down for 6 months.

In addition, we have a “food mine” under the living room. We can access it through a panel in the panel behind the Washing machine in the closet of the downstairs bathroom. There is a system of shelves down there, as well as a Wood decking pathway that use my skateboard trolley on that makes it possible to store all kinds of stuff down there in a climate controlled, cool atmosphere. For example, there’s probably enough food there now for 2 people to live something like 4 years or more. Of course, we have regular odds and ends stored down there as well. What I’m saying is that there is a huge amount of storage down there for Whatever people Want to store. We use that instead of the attics…which are super hot.

I know we can’t expect to get our money out of it but just so you know the value. The hand pump well for the Water cost us about S5000 in 1999. It is a standard 4″ casing and it works perfectly.
Diesel fuel stores well. Diesel fuel from World War 2 will still run a diesel generator fine (it doesn’t separate into varnish in a few months like gasoline does. The diesel generator we bought is super simple mechanically. It is designed so that anyone can operate it and fix it (without computers or sophisticated equipment. The generator will run for 50 years and it is brand new. All told, the generator and batteries and inverter…the off-grid power back up system cost us about $30,000 to install.

I know we can’t expect to get our money out of it but just so you know the value……
