Several years ago I found a once in a lifetime opportunity in Wrangell, AK on the island of the same name. Imagine a multi-family dwelling on five city lots for the bargain price of $167,000, (less than the price of a local 3 bedroom house, and $60,000 less than the asking price of a similar building close by.) What we bought was a low-end Alaska style, (a nice smoke house, but no lawn!) It was full of junk and in need of interior renovating which we tackled. A huge two story place the for the $, it measures approximately 30x80. It has an old but non- leaking roof with a solid underpinning of concrete piers supporting timbers. All this within walking distance of a town with the friendliest people I’ve encountered in over 50 years of traveling the US and Canada.
Want to prepare for the worst possible conditions? Wrangell is in the midst of some of the greatest hunting and fishing in the world. Many of the locals have two freezers, one for sea food and one for game and fowl. No one with basic knowledge and equipment could ever starve in that part of the world. See website for more information.
Yet it has all the conveniences of a larger less remote town. It has a hospital with an extended care unit, and a Alaska Airlines airport with daily flights. Wrangell is a major port on the Alaska ferry system from Bellingham and has receiving facilities for container shipping from Seattle. Food prices are reasonable (for Alaska.). Amazingly there is a golf course, a garden club and a horse club.
