Start with SurvivalRealty.com co-founder Jonathan Rawles’ Survival Retreats & Relocation. “A Guide to Finding Your Secure and Sustainable Home,” this 2020 release aims to equip you with the principles of selecting a survival property, in-depth consideration of retreat areas across the United States, and then educate you on the processes of relocation and establishing your retreat.
Another classic is Joel Skousen’s Strategic Relocation, 4th edition. “Unlike most guides in today’s bookstores that tout the “best places” to live based on golf courses, schools, etc., this book considers future threats that most other people fail to see or choose to ignore.”
In an enjoyable illustrated format, How to Survive Off the Grid from Outdoor Life’s Tim MacWelch is an accessible entry point to the concept of establishing a self-sufficient or off-grid homestead.
To educate yourself on the topic of purchasing a rural home, two clasic references are is Gene LaRue’s How to Find Your Ideal Country Home, and Les & Carol Scher’s Finding & Buying Your Place in the Country. Both are around 20 years old, and while many things have changed, just as many have stayed the same, especially in rural areas.
