Looking for that ideal off-grid home? There are a number of ways to find an off-grid property for sale. These homes are not your typical cookie-cutter tract homes, so you will have to be a little more creative! Here are some great options for your search:
Survival Realty
SurvivalRealty.com is an online marketplace exclusively featuring rural, off-grid and self-sufficient properties. These listings often include features such as solar power, safe rooms or bunkers, spring water, and more. You won’t find anything under 2 acres or in the suburbs (unless it has a secret bunker included!) Properties are listed by agent or for sale by owner across the United States and internationally.
Craigslist
Knowing your target area is key to finding properties on Craigslist. You can’t search by state, but only by region. Pick out the “right” Craigslist to search, and then check back regularly. These listings can be uploaded by both homeowners and listing agents. Pay attention to when the ad was posted, because they are not often updated or removed when a property sells or goes off the market.
Zillow and Realtor.com
Real estate aggregators like Zillow and Realtor.com have the most exhaustive databases of FSBO and agent listings nationwide. With that comes the added challenge of filtering through this to find the properties that you are actually interested in. Utilize the many filter options to search only listings that are the right type (home or land), acreage, price, and location.
Local Agent
For local knowledge and access to the most up-to-date information, consider working with an experienced local land broker. Find an agent that has extensive experience selling rural and remote properties, and who won’t be afraid to get their shoes dirty! A local broker may also be able to provide a search portal for the local MLS, so you can browse the latest property listings. SurvivalRealty.com is another great resource for rural agents
Classified Ads
Local newspapers and classified ads can provide useful leads in searching for property. The details are usually sparse, but it’s possible to learn more through internet research. Treat any of these leads as interesting, but don’t put too much weight on it until you’ve talked with the owner or listing agent. On the upside, property owners that are not tech savvy may opt to advertise their property in print only, and there may be less competition. (The same goes for driving backroads and looking for For Sale By Owner signs by the driveway!)
Facebook Groups
There are a number of facebook groups dedicated to off grid living and home buying. Agents sometimes share new listings on these groups before they have shown up on MLS listing services. Join any group in your intended area, and keep your eyes open for what might come up.
